Painting techniques

Today we have a pure painting tutorial. Actually this is part 2 of our character creation tutorial. In this 2nd part we will drop color and polish the character.

So let's go.

This is our grayscale character concept.

painting techniques

First thing I recommend you to do (I use it sometimes, which is wrong. You have to use it all the time, and believe me it's worth it) is to create a tone or color palette.

So let's decide basically only the skin color tones before we get to business.

Begin to tint the body and the face.

As you can see I've modified the face a little bit. Made it like the slave's face: dead and ugly.

Some legs details: I'm using background color along with a bush to polish the form.

This highlighted contour is very important and helps to make the rendering more realistic.

Some

details on those straps. I will keep em black.

Oh ea I'm using plain brush here. If you want to make something big in the future you have to know how it's done "primitively".

painting techniques

Only the opacity is set to pen pressure.

I'm polishing the skin on the arm. Don't like it at all.

Let's make some kind of bio art. Moreover if taking it forward I'm not completely satisfied with the render and the character itself - could have been way better.

Sometimes it really helps to step away from the painting for some time (30min) to look at it with "fresh" eye. It really helps to see the mistakes you've made.

I took some time to change that head. It looks like this now.

Some color adjustments.

And this is it with creating (part 1) and rendering (part 2) of the character.

Report: the character is a little bit overdone. The pose isn't just correct enough. No lighting.

So practice a lot and make as less mistakes as possible.
