Character Concept Art Illustration

A complete digital painting workflow for character concept art — from rough thumbnail sketch through color blocking to polished final render. Tablet recommended.

Step 1: Thumbnail Sketches

Create a 1200×900px canvas. On a warm gray (#c8b8a8) background, sketch 3–4 small thumbnail compositions using a hard round brush at 50% opacity. Choose the strongest pose and enlarge.

Step 2: Clean Line Drawing

Reduce sketch layer opacity to 30%. On a new layer, draw clean line art with the Brush Tool at 2px. Focus on silhouette readability and anatomical proportions.

Step 3: Color Blocking

Create flat color layers beneath line art for skin, clothing, armor, and background. Use the Lasso Tool to select regions quickly. No shading yet — just establish the palette.

Step 4: Rendering and Shading

Add shadows with Multiply blending mode layers. Build form with soft round brush, sampling darker versions of base colors. Add rim lighting with a soft white brush on Overlay layers.

Step 5: Detail Pass and Texture

Zoom in for detail work — fabric folds, metal scratches, skin pores. Use textured brushes sparingly. Add a subtle noise overlay at 5% on Soft Light for painterly texture.

Step 6: Final Adjustments

Add a Color Lookup or Gradient Map for mood. Sharpen eyes and focal points with Unsharp Mask. Crop to final composition and export at 72dpi for web or 300dpi for print.
