Step 1: Black Canvas

800×600px, black background. Smoke shows best on dark backgrounds.

Step 2: Difference Clouds Base

New layer, fill white. Filter > Render > Difference Clouds. Ctrl+F several times.

Step 3: Smudge Into Smoke

Smudge Tool: strength 70%, large soft tip. Drag upward in flowing wispy motions.

Step 4: Screen Blending

Set smoke layer to Screen mode. Black disappears, white becomes visible smoke.

Step 5: Layer Multiple Wisps

Duplicate smoke layer 3 times. Rotate and scale each for varied smoke plumes.

Step 6: Color Tinting

Add Hue/Saturation: Colorize, low saturation blue-gray for cool smoke tone.

Step 7: Integrate with Photo

Drag smoke layers into photo composite. Mask bottom to blend with scene.
