Create a Starscape Background in Photoshop

Posted on  |  Category: Photo Effects  |  Difficulty: Beginner  |  Photoshop CS+

Learn to build a convincing star field background from scratch using only Photoshop filters — no stock images required. Perfect for sci-fi composites, space-themed designs, and desktop wallpapers.

Step 1: Create the Base Canvas

Create a new document 1024×768 pixels, 72 dpi, RGB. Fill the background with pure black (#000000).

Step 2: Generate Stars with Noise

Create a new layer. Go to Filter > Noise > Add Noise — Amount 25%, Gaussian, Monochromatic. Then Image > Adjustments > Levels: set Input Levels to 200, 1.00, 255 to isolate bright star points.

Step 3: Add Depth with Blur

Duplicate the stars layer. Apply Gaussian Blur (Radius 0.5px) to the duplicate for subtle glow. Set blending mode to Screen. Merge if satisfied with density.

Step 4: Nebula Color Wash

Create a new layer. Render clouds (Filter > Render > Clouds). Apply Motion Blur at 90°, 200px. Set blending mode to Color Dodge, opacity 30%. Add Hue/Saturation: Hue +200 for blue-purple nebula tones.

Step 5: Final Touches

Add a Gradient Map adjustment layer from deep blue (#0a1628) to black. Reduce opacity to 60%. Flatten and save as JPG or PNG for use in your projects.
